Metropolitan University Prague Receives a Gift of 74 Books on Japan

23. 4. 2026 Author: Michal Kolmaš Metropolitan University Prague has received a valuable donation of books through the Read Japan grant project, organized by The Nippon Foundation with the support of the Embassy of Japan. As part of this generous gift, the university library has added 74 books on Japan, including recent academic publications, art books, and important works of Japanese fiction.

The collection includes titles such as The Tale of Genji, The Tales of the Heike, Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata, Personal Matter by Nobel Prize-winning author Kenzaburō Ōe, and a six-volume edition of the famous Japanese manga Akira.

The donation was formally presented by H.E. Kansuke Nagaoka, Ambassador of Japan to the Czech Republic, in person to the MUP Rector prof. Michal Klíma and the Head of the Asian Studies Department, Assoc. prof. Michal Kolmaš. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to The Nippon Foundation and to the Embassy of Japan for this generous gift. It is an outstanding and inspiring collection that will greatly enrich the study of Japan and deepen interest in Japanese society, culture, history, and literature at our university.

The strong interest in the new collection was reflected in the attendance of Asian studies students, who came to see the books during their presentation. The collection will remain in the university library, while also being available for borrowing by students and faculty. We believe this donation will further strengthen Japanese and Asian studies at MUP and provide the wider university community with a unique opportunity to engage with Japan through an exceptional selection of publications.
