More Than Just Language Study in Taiwan
28. 3. 2025 Author: Tamara Petriková Students of Metropolitan University Prague were given the unique opportunity to participate in a three-month language stay in Taiwan, specifically at National Chengchi University in the capital city, Taipei. This programme of up to three-semester funded stays at leading Taiwanese universities, coordinated from 2025 by the Department of Asian Studies in cooperation with other Czech and Taiwanese partners, allowed us not only to begin learning the Chinese language but also to explore the fascinating culture of this country. Every day we engage in intensive Chinese language classes, which, while demanding, are immensely rewarding. This learning experience not only develops our language skills but also deepens our understanding of local traditions and lifestyles. In class, we meet classmates from various parts of the world, providing us with the chance to learn about different cultures and form international friendships.
In addition to academic responsibilities, we find time to discover the charms of Taipei. The city captivated us with its dynamic atmosphere and diversity. We visited the iconic Taipei 101 building, one of the tallest structures in the world, the majestic Chiang Kai-shek Memorial dedicated to one of the country’s most significant historical leaders, and the tranquil Peace Memorial Park, offering relaxation amidst the bustling city.
An essential part of our journey was discovering traditional Taiwanese architecture, temples, and local culinary specialties. We explored night markets, an integral part of Taiwanese culture, where we tasted various specialties. Our stay in Taiwan has provided us with exceptional experiences we will long remember. It offered us a unique opportunity to grasp the basics of the Chinese language, meet local people, and experience the vibrant atmosphere of Asian culture.
