The Department of Asian Studies cordially invites to a public lecture titled "Economic Development in East Asia: Perspective of Market, State Capacity, and Society".This lecture examines economic development in East Asia from a historical perspective. Three theoretical approaches are introduced. Firstly, the lecture reviews the neoclassical view on economic development in East Asia, stressing market function. Secondly, the lecture examines the Statist’s view, emphasizing state capacity (the role of the state) in economic development. Thirdly, the institutionalist’s view, highlighting the state-society relationship, is introduced. Lastly, the lecture explores a comparative analysis between Southeast Asia and Central and Eastern Europe.

SPEAKER: Kaoru Natsuda, Professor at the College of Asia Pacific Studies, Ritsumeikan Asia-Pacific University, Japan
Prof. Natsuda is an expert on international political economy and development, and specializes in industrial policy, industrial development, the automotive industry, the textile and garment industry, and political economy in Asia and Central Europe. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from University of Sydney and MA from University of Bradford. He has been widely published in the most prestigious academic journals, and his latest book titled “Automotive industrialisation: Industrial policy and development in Southeast Asia” was published by Routledge in 2020.

On Friday, 14 November 2025, the Department of Financial Management at MUP welcomed Mr Štěpán Koníček from SAP for a guest lecture focused on modern human resource management and the practical use of artificial intelligence. The event drew approximately 50 students, who appreciated the clear connection between theory and real corporate practice.

From June 2 to 6, the Center for Security Studies (C4SS) at Metropolitan University Prague hosted a week-long Doctoral Summer School under the Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programme (BIP), taking on one of today’s most urgent political questions: How is populism reshaping foreign and security policy in Central and Eastern Europe? The event gathered PhD students from Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania, Portugal, and Bulgaria, each bringing fresh insights and case studies from their own regions. Across five packed days—and two preparatory online sessions—participants dissected narratives, analyzed media, pitched research, and explored publishing strategies with a lineup of top-tier scholars.
