The Department of International Relations and European Studies organised the guest lecture Challenging Sovereignty: How Russia Exploits its Diaspora in the Post-Soviet Space given by Anna Arutunyan.Anna Arutunyan is a Russian-American journalist and writer. Born in the Soviet Union, she grew up and received her education in the United States. In 2002 she returned to Moscow to write about Russia. She is the author of The Putin Mystique (2014) and The Media in Russia (McGraw-Hill, 2009) and the co-author (with Vladimir Shlapentokh) of Freedom, Repression and Private Property in Russia (Cambridge University Press, 2013). As a correspondent for USA Today she covered Russia‘s annexation of Crimea and the military conflict in East Ukraine. Her work has appeared in ECFR, The Wall Street Journal, The Christian Science Monitor, The Nation, Foreign Policy, and other international publications. Until 2014 she was news editor and political correspondent for The Moscow News, where she is an editor and senior correspondent. She has given lectures on Russian power, politics and media at NYU, Harvard, MIT, Tampere University in Finland and at Michigan State University.
